The Membership (MRCEM) and Fellowship (FRCEM) examinations are internationally recognised qualifications awarded by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM), UK. These exams are a vital step for doctors aiming to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine in the UK.
The MRCEM is typically undertaken by doctors at an early to intermediate stage of their Emergency Medicine training. It is divided into three parts:
MRCEM Primary
Focuses on basic sciences relevant to Emergency Medicine (anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology).
Format: Single best answer (SBA) questions
Duration: 3 hours
MRCEM Intermediate SBA
Covers clinical knowledge and decision-making in line with RCEM curriculum.
Format: Single best answer questions
Duration: 3 hours
MRCEM OSCE
Practical clinical exam. Assesses communication, clinical reasoning, procedural skills, and safe patient care.
Format: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
16 Station Exam
Location: London (UK), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi (India)
The FRCEM exam is designed for doctors who have completed MRCEM and are at a more senior level in their Emergency Medicine training. It includes:
FRCEM SBA
Tests advanced knowledge and application of Emergency Medicine across the RCEM curriculum.
Format: SBA questions
Duration: 2 papers, each 2 hours
FRCEM OSCE
Focuses on higher-level clinical practice, leadership, and decision-making in complex emergency situations.
Format: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
