About the exam

What PLAB is, and why it matters.

PLAB — the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test — is the GMC's route for doctors trained outside the UK to demonstrate they can practise medicine safely in the UK. It's the standard, most direct pathway for a doctor with no prior UK specialty commitment.

For most fresh graduates, PLAB is a faster investment of time than a postgraduate membership exam like MRCEM or MRCS — it tests general FY2-level knowledge and clinical skills rather than specialty-specific expertise, so it doesn't require you to have already chosen a specialty.

The exam is built in two parts: PLAB 1 (written knowledge) and PLAB 2 (practical OSCE). PLAB 1 can be sat at centres across India; PLAB 2 is held exclusively at the GMC's Assessment Centre in Manchester.

PLAB vs Membership Exams — at a glance

Both routes grant full GMC registration. PLAB tests general medical knowledge and is open to any fresh graduate; membership exams (MRCEM, MRCS, etc.) test specialty-specific expertise and generally suit doctors who already know their specialty.

If you're set on Emergency Medicine or Surgery, the matching membership exam may be the more efficient long-term investment. For everyone else, PLAB is the more direct route.

Why train with Empower

Faculty who've sat the exam, and now teach how it's marked.

Every Empower PLAB batch is led by doctors who currently practise in the NHS and who've been through PLAB themselves. No outsourced lecturers, no generic content.

Active NHS doctors

Faculty currently practising in UK NHS departments — teaching from the clinical front line, not a textbook.

GMC-aligned

Every session maps to the UKMLA content map and current PLAB exam format — no padding, no out-of-syllabus material.

Small cohorts

Especially for in-person PLAB 2 prep, we cap seats to protect faculty-to-candidate ratio and real feedback.

Beyond the exam

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pass PLAB 1 before booking PLAB 2?

Yes — PLAB 2 dates only become visible once your PLAB 1 result is confirmed, and booking as early as possible matters, since slots can fill up within months.

Is PLAB the same as MRCEM or MRCS?

No. PLAB is the general route to GMC registration, open to any fresh graduate. MRCEM and MRCS are specialty membership exams that also grant registration, but require committing to a specific specialty and generally take longer.

Do I need clinical experience before starting PLAB 1 preparation?

No — PLAB 1 is designed for doctors straight out of MBBS, with no prior clinical experience required.

Where is PLAB 2 held?

Exclusively at the GMC's Assessment Centre in Manchester, UK — our in-person prep is held in India, but the actual exam itself requires travel to the UK.

How is your PLAB 2 course different from a question bank?

Question banks help with recall, but PLAB 2 tests applied clinical communication and examination skills under real exam conditions — our mock circuit and individual feedback are built specifically to close that gap.
